Troy sat at an upscale restaurant bar sipping a brandy, awaiting Barbara. The notes were in a briefcase on the floor next to him. He’d ordered a glass wine for her.
Barbara Lane appeared shortly, and she’s ravishing—long blond hair, wide blue eyes and a traffic-stopper figure. He stood, they greeted each other, and she sat on the barstool next to him.
Troy looked her over. “I don’t think I have to tell you how beautiful you look.”
“Thank you,” Barbara answered. “You’re looking very well yourself. How have you been?”
“Fine. Nothing to complain about. I’m feeling good, and the magazine is doing well.”
Barbara noticed the wine. “Ah. What a nice surprise.” She took a sip, looked up and rolled her eyes in delight. “Ruffino Chianti. One of my favorites. You remem bered.”
“Some things are hard to forget. How have you been?”
“Well, I’m over you at least. I’m just fine and I still love my work.”
They were silent for a few moments. Then, Barbara said, “I have to admit you nearly knocked me over when you called. You said you needed help with something.”
“Yes, I do. But it’s complicated, Barb, and I’d like you not to pry too deeply into it.
Barbara gave him a suspicious look. “Why not?”
“It’s important, Barb. Very important.”
She hesitated and took another sip of wine. “Okay. Tell me what it’s about.”
Troy reached into his briefcase, took out the notes and placed them on the bar in front of her. “I need you to look over these notes and tell what the guy who wrote them was up to. I think it has to do with genetics, so it’s in line with your expertise.”
She leafed through the notes. “You’re right that it relates to genetics. But I’d have to study them thoroughly to find out what they’re about.”
“Take your time. And thank you. I appreciate this.”
“No need for that. I’m doing a friend a favor, that’s all.”
“All right. We’ll keep it at that.”
“Now, how about that dinner I promised you?”
