The tune sounded again from a hidden speaker, announcing that she was permitted back out into the solarium for lunch. She gasped as she rounded the corner and stopped short at the sudden appearance of Nurse Leland. She felt her stomach clench at the stern expression that the woman wore. Wordlessly she handed the shocked girl a glass, the familiar pills settled in at the bottom. Nurse Leland raised her forefinger to Avery’s face, waving it slowly back and forth.
“That’s bad behavior,” she growled softly, the threat in her eyes clear as she waited for Avery to take the pills.
How could she have possibly known that she wasn’t taking them?
“What are they for?” Avery asked as Nurse Leland maintained her icy gaze.
“Vitamins. Take them, now, or I will force them down your throat,” she promised, closing the space between them, the threat snarled from between clenched teeth.
Avery shuddered as she stared from the woman’s glare down at the glass the nurse had pressed into her slack hands and then back again. Not knowing what else to do, she swallowed the pills and then chased them down with one of the water bottles the nurse handed her.
“That’s a good girl.” Nurse Leland smirked, right before she planted her fist firmly into Avery’s stomach. “You give me trouble and I give trouble back. Are we clear?”
The nurse pivoted and left the room without another word as Avery slumped over from the blow, coughing as she fought down the bile in her throat. Avery slowly moved towards the bed and sat down, tears filling her eyes as she shook her head as a single goal flashed through her mind.
She had to get out of here.
