Stephano took her arm and guided her to the elevator. The close proximity in the back seat of the car had tested her restraint. The scent of Stephano’s cologne was like a drug, and Kyra resisted the impulse to kiss him. She was losing it. She needed to say goodbye as soon as she got to the door of her room.
Kyra exited the elevator and walked down the hall. She looked at the numbers on the doors until she came to hers. “Well, goodbye,” she said, without turning around. It was a foolish ploy. Before she could get the door open, Stephano had his hand on her arm. The touch was light, friendly. But Kyra froze anyway.
“What are you afraid of?” he said, and Kyra glanced up at him. The look in his copper eyes was sincere. Her heart wrenched. She wanted him so badly but she refused to let it show.
She shook her head, but no words came. What could she tell him? Half the time it didn’t make sense to her. How could she expect a man she just met to understand? Besides, she didn’t know she could trust him. Trusting was usually a mistake.
Stephano dropped the subject and took his hand away from her arm. She let out a breath, but didn’t turn to face him. Instead, she opened the door to her room.
“Kyra?”
She looked back. Her heart skipped a beat. God, he was sexy. “Yes?” she said.
“I’d like to see you again,” Stephano said. Either too impatient to wait for an answer or unwilling to give her the chance to refuse, he continued, “I’ll meet you here after the show tomorrow. Do you work early or late?”
“Early.”
Stephano made no move to go. Electricity radiated between them, and Kyra had the crazy urge to fall into his arms. “Okay,” he said in a deep voice, filled with promise. “I’ll see you tomorrow, then.”
She went inside and closed the door behind her. Kyra walked over to the window and looked out at the snowy city. Accepting Stephano’s invitation had been against her better judgment. But then, he hadn’t asked, had he? Would she have agreed to see him again if he had? She really wasn’t sure.
