They stared at each other for several long minutes. Her gaze fixed on his mouth, wondering what his lips would taste like. Wondering if she dared to close the distance between them to find out. He solved the problem for her and lowered his mouth to hers. Slowly, he caressed her lips, more than kissing them. He rubbed his mouth over hers until she parted her lips with a silent sigh. Warmth spread out in her stomach as he dipped his tongue between her lips to taste the recesses of her mouth. Flicking his tongue slowly over the roof of her mouth, the kiss grew more intense as their tongues tangled slowly, seductively together.
Lifting his head, he cleared his throat and stood, abruptly ending the moment. He moved to the end of the porch and looked up at the posts. “This looks like a good place to build—”
The report of a rifle rang out. Lil screamed as hot, searing pain exploded through her left arm. She looked down as a stream of bright red blood stained her sleeve. Through a haze of pain, she felt Chet grab her and haul her to the ground. Everything seemed to happen in slow motion as he reached for the Colt on his hip and looked over the railing toward the yard.
Pete rushed to the doorway, shotgun in hand.
“Get her in the house. She’s been shot,” Chet snapped.
“I’m okay,” Lil stammered. “I’m okay. I can—” Blackness enveloped her.
