Utter Stillness and Expectant Silence
Wait without thought for you are not ready for thought.
So the darkness shall be light and the stillness the dancing
Alan Watts
Stop your chatter and get beyond your whirlpool of thoughts. Speak only when absolutely necessary! Communicate on a deeper level because it is only in the depth of silence that you will cleanse your perceptions and find infinity. I do not have the vocabulary through verbal language to describe the ecstasy of silence. It makes me want to be occupied in things that benefit my soul. It is so beyond description because as you close your outer eyes you open your inner eye and listen to the whisper of your soul. Then your whole being becomes your eye with which you see the world. Actively engage with silence, a space where you find inner stillness and peace. This is where you begin to see with your inner eyes and hear with your inner ears. It is a space full of tranquility, equilibrium and harmony here. The longer you stay in the silence, the more you become absorbed into the Silence. This is where you will enjoy a deeper state of serenity. Eventually you disappear into the Silence as you bathe yourself in the total stillness. Listen for wisdom to come from your own inner voice. This is a divine occasion because there is nowhere to go and nothing to do but listen to your own inner wisdom. This is your new beginning filled with the power of mystical potential. In this silence you will find how worthy you are of great honor and how magnificent you are as a child of the Light. Stop hiding your divinity the same way that cataracts blur your vision. Remove the veil, remove the screen. Are you ready to learn something beyond that with which you have grown accustomed?
Silence often conjures memories of my time in the Himalayas when I was invited to speak during the month of November on hypnosis at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurological Sciences (Institute of Neurology) in Bangalore in the southern part of India. While there, I felt an irresistible current draw me to northern India to hike the majestic Himalayan Mountains. The unforgiving bitter winds and jagged peaks of the mountains are just commanding. The silence is haunting and remains in memory and consciousness and not quickly forgotten. The Himalayas bow my head to nature and to Spirit! It is an untouched and undefeated part of our world. In these mystical mountains full of wonder and mystery is where the gods descend from heaven to walk among the snowy peaks of the Himalayas. The incredible panoramic majesty of the mountains, of the hidden valleys and isolated peaks, was breathtaking. My very soul was lost in the sheer magnitude of the beauty before me despite losing electricity every day in early evening. I quickly learned to navigate my way in my room through candlelight. There was incredible physical beauty unlike any other that I had seen. This is where the pranic current is highly charged from the footsteps of the sages, and the energy vibrates very rapidly because it is pure here and has not been contaminated by various pollutions unlike many other parts of India. I found it to be the perfect place to merge my mind with the universe in a perfect ecstatic union. This was clearly a sacred moment in my ordinary life, a moment of great expansion in my awareness.
This spiritual journey to the foothills of the Himalayas felt hauntingly familiar. I couldn’t help feel I had been here before. I pondered on these majestic mountains and the many seekers of truth who come from all over the world to pray and meditate and how they forged a connection with my life. An overwhelming tide of emotions surged within me. I wondered what historical nexus and node I fitted into. What is my connection between these majestic mountains and my soul? Everything seemed illuminated. I was seized with the feeling of extraordinary experience knowing that this is the heart and soul of the top of the world – the majestic Himalayan mountains – the mystical Himalayas as the locals call it. During those weeks in India, I lived in a strange and shifting rhythm and in an utterly transformed state.
Everything around me seemed enchanted. I kept reciting the Buddha’s Bhaddakaratta Sutra, “Do not pursue the past. Do not lose yourself in the future. Looking deeply at life as it is in this very moment, the meditator dwells in stability and freedom!” This moment matters.
While in India, one of my hosts, a former lieutenant in the Army of India, took me to chat with a spiritual Master. The spiritual Master informed me very quickly in our conversation that during this life time “you will experience self-realization.” Rudely I laughed out loud asserting, “You must have me confused with someone else. I have so much work to do!” He continued to shake his head from side to side which for Indians means “yes” and I kept laughing and protesting. In 1997 I had not yet evolved into the understanding of self-realization. But now I know it to mean that in comparison to the bliss of the perennial knowledge that we acquire, everything appears and feels worthless compared to it. Self-realization is the absence of ignorance. It is about realizing the soul. I have stopped laughing as I have learned what I am not. I feel full. I need nothing.
I have spent a lifetime in search of my spiritual self which became displaced in my unconscious as social convention, psychological theoretical assumptions through fourteen years of academic training, and cultural language stripped my spirit. In this search, I learned to move from the old structures into a new paradigm with the primary authoritative guidance coming from my own voice. I learned slowly that I either drink from my own “spiritual well” or die! Since then I have passed through many struggles in attaining a certain balance in the equation of my life’s purpose, and, of course, my life’s objectives. Every “struggle” has moved me toward Spirit.
You can find Spirit in the world of everyday activities as readily as anywhere else. Let every movement carry you Godward. In the ordinary is where you will meet the sacred. It is the ordinary that will peak your states of consciousness, expand your awareness and become a powerful force for social change. Desire to learn to use your ordinary experiences and your difficulties to befriend spirit, and awaken heart – then have a passion to plumb to your soul’s full extent - - right now! Life rushes onward like a roaring stream and drowns our thoughts in its noise. However, these unforgettable moments have marked themselves in golden pen upon the calendar of my years!
In Silent communication you can transcend the three-dimensional world of every day experience and realize a higher dimensional reality. There is absolutely nothing that a mirror could ever do to attract the sun but, in its stillness, and brightness, the sun attracts and nourishes everything. A highly spiritual colleague of mine said to me directly one time, “You are like the sun, Teri. All you have to do is merely appear and be there. Some people are nourished by the sun and some people are burned by the sun because they are not prepared to receive its nourishment. But it is not the fault of the sun.” It is also your choice what you achieve out of your utter stillness. Through it you can prepare your mind to connect with the Divine, the Light will shine brightly within you, and you will dissolve all boundaries. In Silence you have the opportunity to break through the barriers that keep you chained to your old world of conditioning if you abandon your self to your Self.
How do you access your inner life? By moving inward gradually rather than living on the surface of life. Inner silence guides, illumines and directs you. In this silence is where you will release all negative emotions that clog up your heart and your cells. In this silence you will begin to loosen any crystallized emotions that have imbalanced your organs, your muscles and your tissues. Inward is where you will find your subtle self which is in constant communication with Consciousness. This will help you to widen the limits of your physical self and will begin your ascent. You will begin to feel expanded and eventually you will merge fully with Infinite Intelligence. You will become luminous as your body recalibrates with every movement of consciousness. This will be the making of your spiritual transformation. This is where you will find truth rather than falsehoods. Your healing process must begin at the spiritual level and through meditation you will be inspired from within. You will find your own way intuitively rather than relying on the opinions of others. Then you will move into service through action inspired by dynamic inner silence. Meditation will take you into the deepest levels of your Consciousness and aid you in manifesting your divine Source. There is nothing beyond Consciousness. All is within you. There is only you. Your Inner Self will guide you.
Let us dive into that Silence through meditation because meditation is an organic unfoldment from the lateral world of fiction. It awakens your consciousness by strengthening your electromagnetic field allowing you to be more present to your relationships and to deal more effectively with life and its challenges. Meditation is not about quieting the mind, but finding the quiet that is already within you. Just for today, quiet that internal dialogue and just be grateful.
