The Last Moonlight Dragon
“Back in ancient times when humans hid in the shadows and the magical creatures in the realm ruled the land, the dragons controlled a fifth kingdom. It was a beautiful land of rolling hills, warm springs, and valleys filled with beautiful flowers.”
“I thought you were going to tell us a story about the vampires,” Robert whined.
“I am. I am.”
“Don’t sound like it,” Rupert said with a pout.
“Have a little patience, Your Royal Highnesses. The vampires will arrive as soon as I set the scene.” While I wanted to linger over the image of the warm paradise the dragons once ruled, I skipped over the parts that explained how peace and abundance had filled the sunny land and dove straight into the next chapter of the story, the part I didn’t enjoy. “The vampires show up just as the dragons invited the humans to live with them in their Valhalla—that means paradise. Humans, you must realize, at this ancient time, were little more than animals themselves, living in caves and eating what they could pick from the wild or kill during a hunt.
“The dragons, on the other hand, lived in grand palaces that were large enough to accommodate their massive size.”
“You still aren’t talking about the vampires,” Ryan complained with a lisp.
I mussed the boy’s hair before giving a nervous glance out the tower window. The battle still raged outside. The screams of war were loud enough that they reached our ears at all times of the day. Because of that, I struggled to tell the dark tales the boys craved when I wanted to cling to the happier tales.
“The vampires were lurking in the dragon’s paradise, at the borders, watching, hating. They hate that the dragons are helping the humans. Humans, you remember—”
“Are vampire food,” Robert finished for me.
“Exactly. So, having humans under the dragons’ protection was a threat to the vampires. They hunted at night because stepping into the daylight would kill them. They hunted the blood of the humans, feeding off our ancestors with their large fangs. They drained humans until they were nothing more than empty sacks of flesh.”
The boys shivered with delightful horror at that image. I leaned forward.
“They are tricky creatures,” I continued. “The vampire looks and acts just like a human. They’ll befriend you just as sure as anyone here in the castle. Their charms are well-known. You’ll fall under their thrall before you realize that it’s happening. And once it happens, it’s too late for you. The vampire will”—I drew my arms up and then jumped toward the boys as I shouted—“strike!”
My fingers wiggling, I tickled my young charges. The boys giggled until they were panting for breath.
“The dragons watched the humans in their land be taken in by the vampires,” I said as I sat back on my bed. “Over and over, clans of humans would be left empty as the night beasts moved through, betraying and feasting on the trusting residents. The dragons would not let this crime stand. They took to the air and started hunting the vampires.”
“But it wasn’t easy,” Ronald, the eldest of the princes said.
“That’s right,” I agreed. “A great war broke out.”
“The vampires overpowered the dragons,” Ronald said. He stood up straight. “The dragons fled like the cowardly lizards they are. It was up to my ancestor and her magic. She became the first queen of Earst. She was the one who chased the vampires from our land.”
