Lafayette's Baptism of Fire
by E. Percy Moran, 1909
Library of Congress
But just a few weeks later came the fight at Brandywine,
And no one could make Lafayette avoid the battle line.
For when the Brits outflanked us with a most effective trick,
He sallied forth into the fight and helped out double quick.
He rallied men (who’d panicked and were trying to run away)
To stand and fight, and thus he tried his best to save the day.
