Greeting Dr. Lerned 200 Years Later!
Nearly every day I pass by the beautiful house in Hopkinton Village which belonged to Dr. Lerned. No one has lived in it for years, for some reason. There is still a granite hitchig post in front of it which I imagined Clara using when she was desperately seeking medical help for her stepmother. Even though I know this didn't really happen, I find myself greeting Dr. Lerned in my head whenever I see his home. At the time Lafayette stopped in Hopkinton (June 27, 1825) there was apparently beautiful French wallpaper in one of the rooms in this house. There is a tradition that Lafayette went to this house (across the street from the reception in front of Wiggins Tavern), perhaps to see this Palais Royal paper. A Buss from Lafayette
Dr. Ebenezer Lerned was a well-respected doctor in Hopkinton. A graduate of Harvard and Dartmouth, he helped found Hopkinton Academy in 1826. There is a tradition in Hopkinton that he was a friend of Lafayette and that the General stopped at the Lerned home on his way through Hopkinton. Lerned was only thirteen years old or so at the start of the war, however, and I cannot find any reference to him in Revolutionary War records. (There was an Ebenezer Lerned who was a Brigadier General, but this was a much older man and not the good doctor.) On the other hand, Lerned was one of the men who briefly spoke at the Concord dinner for Lafayette.
