The officer looked down at him with contempt. “Don’t wait here for your father and his friends. We picked them up yesterday.” In three strides he was at the van and climbing into it.
Jim got up and stumbled toward his car. Pain racked his body. He stopped and vomited. He took a few more steps to his car and fell against the car door. The black van whooshed past him. He grasped his car door handle, pulled it open, and dropped across the backseat. For some minutes he lay there, dazed and in agony.
“We picked them up yesterday.” The officer’s voice echoed in his head. So that was why his dad, John, and Gary hadn’t called. What had WE done to them? If they were still alive, where were they? Where were the officers taking his mom and grandma? He had to find out.
