Prayer is one way of getting to know God. When we pour out our hearts to Him, He draws near to us and listens. If we talk to our spouse only when we need him, our relationship will become strained. If we talk to our best friend only when we need her, she will not be our best friend very long. We need interaction with God in both praying and listening through His Word.
Prayer is our emotional connection with a loving heavenly father who wants to connect with us. It is our way of showing our dependence and trust in our God.
Prayer is an avenue of worship. Through praying we show and tell our God how much we love and adore Him. We praise His name and give Him the glory and honor that is due Him.
Prayer is one way of obeying God. He has commanded us to pray. Romans 12:12 says, “Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.”
Prayer is our way of petitioning God for help for our family, friends, our leaders, and our land. “First of all, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people” (1 Timothy 2:1).
Prayer is our way of asking God to help us. David prayed for himself that God would forgive him of his sin (Psalm 51). In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed for God to not make Him go to the cross (Mark 14:36). We can pray for forgiveness, for strength, for wisdom (James 1:5, 6), for healing (James 5:13, 14), and for God’s guidance and help.
