“You mentioned that you tried it on yourself first.”
Kornfeld sighed. “I did. And while the results were
disappointing, I suffered no discernable damage. I did quite
extensive testing just to be sure.”
“What about the wafer?”
“A failure like the others.”
“I see.” Marc waited.
“We tested it to see how much data it held. The results
were inconclusive.”
“That’s too bad.” He could only imagine how thrilled
Kornfeld would have been if his own upload had succeeded.
“Indeed. But we’re all very pleased with our latest
results.”
“The news, when it comes out, will be a world-wide
sensation,” Marc said.
“I only hope it doesn’t stir up too much controversy.”
“Scientific controversy?”
“Scientific, social, religious--we’re stepping on some huge
prerogatives here. Have we invented a machine with a soul?”
Kornfeld’s smile teetered between excitement and trepidation.
Marc thought about the potential for agitation from
religious leaders and others. The news could provoke some truly
ugly responses.
