The biggest surprise was a yellowed newspaper article pinned to the wall. The man before me had a sculpture in a world-famous art gallery in Washington, D.C. The newspaper picture showed him and the sculpture. It was his interpretation of evolution. He showed me other sculptures in his yard, including one he called Mother and Child. The problem was the baby had fangs.
We sat down and he told me his story. Simon had a previous problem with alcohol and he would go on binges for days. This last binge was different. His family told him he had screamed for 3 days straight. When it was over he had a spirit guide. This guide had him go get art materials and he began to sculpt.
I asked him, “What is your guide’s name?” Simon replied with a smile, “You know I can’t tell you that.”
As I said it was a game of chess. I knew that something more was going on; however, I could not put my finger on it.
“The school district has asked me to teach art in the elementary schools.” Simon told me.
