“Repeat what will happen to you if you fail to comply, Jake,” Sean said.
“Uh, you’ll remove my fingernails,” Jake stammered.
“Good.” Sean pulled a set of keys from his pocket, dropped them into Jake’s hand. Then he turned his wrist, eyed his watch. “You have sixty seconds.”
“Sixty…?”
“Fifty-eight. Better hurry.”
Jake practically rolled out the door. He stumbled and did an awkward jog to the front door. The keys fell out of his hand, clattered on the cement entry. He snatched them up, stabbed one into the keyhole, and finally disappeared inside.
Sean squeezed the steering wheel. Under different circumstances, he’d find this amusing. Setting Jake loose in the criminal world would be a comedy hour. If only Maria wasn’t tangled in the mess Jake created.
Jake charged out the front door. Swung it shut, but didn’t bother to lock it. Loped across the lawn, one leg hobbling under the force of his weight. He pulled open the passenger door and dropped onto the seat, panting.
Sean looked at his watch. “Seventy-five seconds, Jake!”
Jake’s face went white. “I couldn’t find it! I thought it was on my nightstand. That’s where I normally leave it, you know? But it wasn’t there! Turns out I left it in my pants. The ones I’d been wearing the night before you … well, you know. They were on the floor, next to my bed. I didn’t do anything else. I swear!”
Sean believed him, though he considered yanking a few fingernails out just to make himself feel better. He held his hand out. “Give it to me.”
