"You wanted to understand what's happening to Tommy. Isn't that what you said?" Greg whispered to Brian.
"Yes, I do but…" he tried to respond, but his jaw wouldn't allow him to convey to his thoughts.
"You want to feel everything he's felt, don't you? You know your place is by his side," Greg said.
Brian knew these ghosts were doing more than listening in on his conversations. These entities understood his innermost thoughts and desires, perhaps better than he did, and that was the scariest thing of all. There was no point in lying to them because everyone knew the answer. Perhaps there was importance in allowing this tiny act of free will because they allowed his voice to return. "Yes, I do. Please show me," he responded against his better judgment.
They gently lowered him to his knees. The cool water was now swirling around his chest as the Unseen Ones softly chanted around him. Brian envisioned the words that he typed into the computer earlier, and articulated them aloud with the others. An intense feeling of euphoria intermingled with his mounting abject terror, leaving him unable or unwilling to stop the events now unfolding, despite the waves of fear sweeping across him.
He felt hands against the back of his head pushing his face down into the brackish water. As his body thrashed and rebelled against the water invading his lungs, he felt another presence enter the basement. It reached out, took him by the hand, and guided him through the void that enveloped his body. He knew from Tommy that this entity was Yog-Sothoth, the so-called Lurker at the Threshold. It was pleased by his suffering and fear, though Brian understood that The Lurker feasted on all the intense emotions and sensations that were evoked by the process, and those, too, he couldn't hide from his assailants, The Lurker, or even himself. In the distance, he saw a rocky shoreline and knew that he'd found the Realm of Dreams and Darkness, and somewhere behind the swirling mists was the city of R'lyeh
