The weed-strewn path had gradually become more cobblestone in nature, though the individual stones were highly fractured with weeds and underbrush growing through and around them. There were signs of marble lampposts with rusted iron holders that he guessed must have one held torches or candles. Only the dim purplish light cast by the chaotic skies overhead provided illumination. The sound of voices and chanting wafted in and out of the air, close enough to let Tommy know that the mysterious children of R’lyeh were present and yet far enough away to put him slightly at ease. All the while, the voice called to him, allaying all his fears about what was to come, though every instinct in his young body fought against it.
Motion from the adjoining rooftop caught his attention. He saw the amorphous shadow slinking along the rooftop, crawling on two massive front legs that dragged a large bulbous posterior. The appendages morphed and extended away from the body like a squid swimming in the sea. The shadow leapt forward and disappeared into the darkness before he could spy the creature directly. In the distance, the creature made a shrill cry that sounded like "Tekeli-li! Tekeli-li!" Tommy didn't know whether to be relieved that the creature disappeared, or to be terrified that it may be awaiting his presence further up the road.
