A Bowhunter in God’s Cathedral

A DREAM SHALL LEAD ME

Last night I had a dream. As most dreams, it was disjointed and consisted of unrelated snippets.

At one point, I was a hero. For what, I’ll never know, but people went out of their way to shake my hand as I walked through the large ballroom, and everyone was whispering and casting glances toward my wife and me as we made our way across the floor.

I found myself alone, but there was a menacing feeling in the air, and I was afraid. I turned the corner to find a man I estimated to be in his early twenties. He wore a leather jacket similar to that worn by Marlon Brando in “On the Waterfront.” He appeared as the leader of a large group of men and women of about the same age. There was jostling and unrest amongst the group, and they looked for someone to direct them. To what end, I did not know.

I took control of the unruly group and was challenged by the young man in the leather jacket. A verbal confrontation ensued, and the crowd, somewhat reluctantly, did as I directed and started to move off.

I found myself entering a small room with lockers lining the walls. Inside was the leather jacket guy. His intention was clear. He intended to beat me to a pulp.

This was when the substance of the dream became manifest. As I reasoned with someone without reason, I began to see with a clarity never experienced before. Words came from my mouth that seemed to have no connection to my cognizant thoughts. They were as fresh and new as though a very wise and insightful person was speaking them. At the same time, they were so basic that they seemed unnecessary to verbalize. I listened to myself, and I learned.

We all make choices. We must make choices. It is impossible for us to pass through a single day without making choices. It is our personal outlook on life that forms the basis for our choices. Regardless of your background, you are free to choose.

The choices you make will have everything to do with who you become.
