Paul and Jeremy had retreated for a break to Paul’s room once again. This time, they did have a drink, but decided that it would be ok because it was Vodka, believing it didn’t have a smell that would be detected. Jeremy finally spoke about the one thing that kept them working together. They were sitting comfortably with their drinks when he said, “We haven’t talked about this, but the knife. We both know that you are holding it over my head. You evidently felt that you needed it in spite of our feelings toward each other. So, Paul. What’s going to happen? What do we do about this? Throw it in the sea after we’ve ruined her? Come on, we should be together on this.”
Paul was shocked at his question, but thought that maybe they could actually come together on this crazy scheme. “A lot of stuff has happened the last few days, hasn’t it, Jeremy? Things we could never have dreamed of. The knife is but a mere memory now. Yes, it’s full of evidence, but so much has happened since then, I almost have to laugh about it. It probably wasn’t even needed in the first place.” He saw the look on Jeremy’s face, and changed his course of talk. “You know? When we get past this thing with Susi, I’d be willing to have a little celebration with you. We could rent a boat and say, do a fishing trip. What do you say, Buddy?”
“Paul, Paul, you make me laugh. Why on earth do you think that I’d consider venturing out in a boat with the likes of you? Have you forgotten that I know who you are, what you’re capable of? You come up with a better idea, and maybe I’ll trust you. Paul, how did we get here? I see you changing in front of my eyes. Where is that man with the confidence, that brilliant man I loved so? You really don’t seem all that bright to me anymore. Help me out, here, Paul.”
