“Tomorrow my mom will be here, and I don’t want to hurt her, so if I seem less loving toward you for a few days, please know that you are in my heart.” Emma was still dealing with blurred eyes and now a strained tummy. “You know, maybe memories like the Boxer Boys can be in your conversations with Mom. I mean, those memories belong to both of you.”
“Mori and I had our problems, but that was a long time ago, and because of you, I’m determined to fix my relationship with her.” She waved her index finger in a scolding way, but her eyes were smiling. “But if she jumps on me with fists coming my way, I will have to fight back, you know.”
“That never happened, did it?” Emma’s nose hurt from the wine coming out. “Ouch, Gloria. That hurt.”
“It actually did happen once. We were on the floor in Sticks, and she was mad at me for a good reason. It was such a good reason that I don’t want to tell you. I guess I had a mean streak in me toward her, but I don’t feel that way anymore.
