Emma glanced at the time and jolted out of her chair. Speaking into the phone, she said, “Daddy, I have to go. I didn’t realize the time. Gloria’s expecting me to meet her outside the ballroom, and as you know, nobody keeps her waiting.”
“Honey, that’s fine. You go ahead, but understand that we can’t keep this from your mom any longer. I’ve gone along with it so far because I felt it should be you telling her, but since you haven’t done your part, I need to let her know. She’s not going to be happy with you. You just don’t understand the animosity she has for Gloria. If you hear thunder tonight, know that it’s probably your mom fussing about your deceit.”
“I haven’t betrayed her, Daddy. This has nothing to do with her. It’s my life.” She looked at the clock again, “Daddy, we have to talk later, I really have to go.”
“Ok, Emma. But you’re wrong. Keeping this from her was pure deception, and it has to stop tonight. I’ll give her the news, so expect to hear from her tomorrow. I love you, Emma.”
“Me too, Daddy. Good night.”
Putting down the phone, she ran to the mirror to be sure that she was presentable. Pleased with her reflection, she headed for the ballroom, knowing she was a few minutes late, and that anything over one minute was considered just plain late. Damn! Reaching the entrance, there was no Gloria. Emma smiled, realizing that luck was with her. She proudly stood and greeted guests as she waited for Gloria’s arrival.
