Emma’s first thought was to check for phone messages, and sure enough, there it was. Before she listened to the tirades from her mother, she poured herself a glass of wine. Then she sat next to the phone and pressed the button.
“Emma, this is Mom. You father has let me in on your little secret. What in the world were ya thinkin’? I know you’ve had a fantasy about this woman all your life, but Honey, do ya think she cares about all that? She’s usin’ ya to spite me, I know it! Enough of all this, your dad and I are flyin’ down there and will be there on Wednesday. If there aren’t enough rooms, we’ll just have to stay with you. You told your daddy how scared you were tonight cause you were a few minutes late. Well, let me tell ya, that woman was late to everything if I recall, as much as…” The message ended with her ranting taking more time than allotted on the recorder. But the machine continued on with the next message, “Yes, she was late to everything, an’ sometimes as much as hours. And did she care about what anybody else thought? No, she didn’t have time to think about anyone but herself. Your fantasies for this witch are based on just that, fantasies. Emma, what have you done?! Expect us on Wednesday.” The message ended, but immediately, another one came on. “I love you, Emma. Just disappointed, that’s all.” Then, her mom could be heard yelling. “Jimmy, get over here. Say goodbye to Emma. She needs us more than ever.”
“Hi, Honey. Dad here. You know I love you, and I guess Mom and I are coming to México.” Before the line went dead, Emma could hear them talking to each other. “Mori, tone it down, you know she doesn’t mean to hurt us.” Then the line went dead.
