Mickey had been dead for nearly 12 years when finally, after several attempts, he made contact with Laura. She had looked as beautiful to him as the day they’d met, and he didn’t have to spend valuable time convincing her that it was him. That was when they came up with the idea. If he was really doomed to roam the world for eternity as it appeared, they would have to figure out a way to keep Laura alive. She’d spent time studying the philosophies of reincarnation. It was a longshot, but if they could use it, maybe they’d have a way to be together forever. It had been a teary moment for them both when she told him she’d have to die for them to be together, but she promised that she would will her soul into another. She asked him to find a good man, one that would raise the child to be good, and kind. It was that night when they figured out how to make their love last forever. They didn’t know if it would work, but with his new way of making things happen, they felt as if there was a chance.
There had been a newspaper sitting on her table, and it was open to a page showing an article about a man. The superintendent of the schools in Seattle was trying to push through some interesting ideas for his district, but was unfortunately dealing with a very political board. Mickey picked it up and read aloud to Laura. The man was in his forties, but still single. He’d evidently spent his life working for the kids of his district, leaving no time for his own family. He sounded like a good man, just what they were looking for. That was the night they selected Benjamin Cross to father Emma. The rest was up to Mickey to will it all to happen. He’d had no idea how he would do it, but at last he had a reason for roaming the earth. He needed to time it so that the birth of Ben’s child would coincide with the death of his Laura. That would be the difficult part. He promised her that he would do everything in his power to make it happen, but that if he was able to figure it out, she would need to know the identity of the mother, and when the birth date would be. That was the hardest thing, knowing that he’d need to tell her when she would die.
