“That Susi lady is trying to change what happened all those years ago. You know she can’t do that, what do we do?”
“I need to know everything, so start at the beginning.”
Paul hated having to consult Jeremy. His pompous attitude left Paul feeling ill, and watching the certainty in Jeremy grow had affected him in a disturbing way. He felt himself relying on him more each day. He relayed the story Bobby had told him, and then waited for some ideas from him.
After all they’d meant to each other over the years, they had a special bond, knowledge of a brutal murder, and of why they were in Mazatlán. Paul began laughing uncontrollably, “Do you think that Ben knows what we’re up to? He was a pretty smart guy, and now he must be cringing. Either that or he’s laughing at us from the heavens above.”
Jeremy had become more of a thinker than Paul. So his silence was a good thing in Paul’s mind. Finally, Jeremy spoke. “I don’t understand why I’m sitting here even thinking about this, Paul. You are not a good man, and in my opinion, not all that bright. However, with that said, here we are together.” There was a long silence before he continued, “I don’t think Susi can change history, I believe that the history was established after she does whatever she’s doing there. And with that thinking, it is imperative that she stay there to finish her work. Does that make sense to you?” The look on Jeremy’s face changed, “And as for Ben, I’m sure he wouldn’t have anything to do with you. Come on, Paul. Let’s pretend he’s at the door right now. And he knows everything about the two of us. He used to love these kinds of mind games, didn’t he? In this game, he has to choose one of us to befriend again. Would he choose you or me, Paul?” He laughed, “I really do think he’d pick strength and intelligence. And who do you think that might be, Paul?”
“You’re a bastard, Jeremy. What about the old guy? You don’t think he knows what we’re up to? Who knows, maybe he has plans for us.” He’d hit a nerve by the looks of Jeremy’s expression, so he left while he had the upper hand.
