“What in the hell is wrong, Katie?” Mori ran to her side and listened as Katie told her about the disaster.
Katie took a deep breath and found new strength. “Ok,” she held Mori’s arm firmly. “Come on, let’s start making some calls.” She ran behind the bar to find the phone book. “Come on, Mori, I need your help. Here, take my cell. We need to call numbers.”
Katie started by calling all the stores in Wind River. Each one told her that with CNN in town, they were sold out of all their liquor. Mortified, she started scribbling down the names and phone numbers of people she knew, as fast as she could look them up. “You start at the bottom and I’ll start at the top. Tell them we need help and find out if someone can drive to Idaho Falls and bring back a truckload of supplies.”
Mori’s eyes widened and she looked hopeful for a moment, then she dazed over again. “Katie, they won’t be back in time, there’s not enough time.”
“Stop it, Mori, just shut up and do what I say. If we can find one person who will make the trip to Idaho Falls, then all we need to do is find enough people to help us until the truck makes it back here tonight. Now, are you with me?” She realized that her hands were firmly gripping Mori’s arms. “I’m sorry, Mori.” She released her hold and went for the phone.
