“Mori, we need to forget our differences in order for this to work. I need you to get us to the right people, but you need to button it up and let me persuade them to work with us. You think you can do that?” She looked straight ahead as she spoke.
Mori cringed at the sound of her voice before responding. “Are you really so dumb, Gloria? I don’t get why you let yourself be used. You dress like you’re beggin’ for attention, and boy do you get it. But don’t you see that they’re usin’ ya? Do you even have any real friends?”
“You’re obviously clueless, but I’m gonna spell it out for ya since we’re stuck together today.” Gloria didn’t seem phased by her comments as she continued. “The answer to your question is, yes. I don’t have many, but I do have real friends, and the word REAL is in big capital letters. My friends know me for who I really am, and are willin’ to take me the way I am, and they understand that I’m never used by anyone. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Men are weak and I capitalize on that to get what I want. Now, you tell me who’s usin’ who? We’re gonna find what we want today because of me, and you can take that to the bank.”
“Oh, I see. You hate men. I got it, Gloria.” Mori was ready to turn the car around. “It’s nice to spend the day with someone who has such little respect for most of our customers.”
“Oh, Mori. Get off your high horse. I don’t hate men. You don’t get me at all. Growin’ up in Clinton wasn’t exactly a picnic, ya know, a bunch of hick cowboys who thought they could use me whenever they pleased. If you hadn’t noticed, I’ve been blessed with some good assets. It took a few years for me to figure it out but I did learn what I needed to do to survive. I even had the mayor twisted around my little finger. All I had to do was give a little and then I could manipulate them any way I wanted.” She paused and thought about going on, but just laughed. “Listen, forget it. I really don’t care what you think about me, just stay out of my way when I’m workin’ these guys today, got it?”
“Yea, I got it. I really got it, witch.” She pulled onto a dirt road. “Try not to break a heel, we’re at our first stop.”
