“Listen, Gloria. I’m grateful that you spied on the enemy but I don’t want you to worry about working that angle again.” He looked embarrassed, but continued. “You don’t want to harm your reputation, if you know what I mean.”
She looked at him and put her hand on his cheek, as a mother would do when consoling her son. “No, Quinton. I don’t know what you mean. Why don’t you tell me?”
He became increasingly uncomfortable but forged on. “Look, I don’t need you to compromise yourself to help me. You’re so much better than that. It’s clear to me that you’re smart, and, well, I for one am glad Ben found you and brought you here.” He quickly removed her hand and picked himself off the couch, turning to find the way out of his discomfort.
