Cue wasn’t looking his best, preoccupied about something. “I have a meeting with the bank this afternoon. Sorry man, but we’ll have to do our male bonding some other time. Listen, could you take Katie? She’s had a rough couple of days, and could use the change of scenery.”
“We should be fine with the bank. Why the worried look? Is there more that I don’t know about? I can put this trip off if there’s something I can do to help around here.” Ben was uncomfortable taking Katie, especially when it was Cue’s idea. He couldn’t help thinking, Does he know? Is he setting us up?
Cue stood and patted his friend’s arm. “No, man. I’m usually worried about the bank, but this should actually be a good visit. You guys go and get back to help us tonight, ok?”
“Ok, well I guess that’s it. Do you know where she is? I need to get going.”
“I think she’s at her place, but you’d better call first.” Cue stared at his friend and stopped at the door. “Good luck, Ben. And thanks for doing this.” With that he was gone, leaving Ben alone and uneasy. Something didn’t feel right, but on the other hand, the idea of taking the trip with her was inviting. He picked up the phone and dialed her number.
“You want me to go where, Ben? I don’t know, what would Cue think?” She paused to hear his response, “He what? Why would he offer my company to you?”
“Katie, he feels bad about the stress he put you under the past couple of days. Can you be ready in twenty minutes? We need to get going.”
She agreed, and after hanging up the phone, wondered if they were doing the right thing, but she also had a sense of excitement about getting away for a day, getting away with Ben.
