“I’ve never loved anyone the way I love you. I plan on marrying you after this mess is settled, and if you say no, I’ll spend the rest of my life trying to convince you to change your mind. I will do that because I know you feel the same way about me.” He took a deep breath. “You’re hurt now, and it’s killing me to see it because I know I’m the one that did this to you.” He paused, knowing he was coming to the sensitive part of his speech. “I was crazy with jealousy, anger, pain… you name it. When you made the decision to move into Cue’s house, it made no sense to me. How could you walk away from such a rare and special love, to be kind to him, to spare his feelings? It made no sense to me, so I did what any crazed, stupid male would do. I got drunk, I got stinkin’ drunk.”
An eagle soared past them, as close as ten feet, and landed in the top of a tree that was actually below where they were sitting.
They both froze, staring at the bird. No words were said for several minutes, while the bird stared back at them. Then, suddenly, as if it found them boring, it raised its massive wings and lifted itself into the air. The sound of his wingspread was loud and impressive. It soared above them for a few more minutes, then began flapping its wings and soon disappeared into the sky.
Ben started laughing. “I brought you here so we wouldn’t be interrupted.” He saw a smile in one corner of her mouth, and began to relax a little.
