He looked at her beauty but not like all the other men had done in her past. He saw her kindness and strength, and felt close to her. He hugged her back and kissed her on the cheek, and then drew his head away from hers and looked into her eyes. Pulling her closer, he kissed her gently, and felt a warmth race through him. It took all his strength, but he pulled himself away from her and said while still holding her, “Thanks for joining me on the walk, Gloria, and I hope you’ll come out with me again, but now it’s getting late, very late. I’ll walk you home.”
She held onto his arm for the walk back, and gave him a quick kiss when they finally said good night. Inside, she felt something that was foreign to her, and for the first time, she wished that Quinton were available. Stop it, Gloria. It’s no good to get soft on a man. It’s a good thing that he’s got Katie. She got into bed, but before drifting off, she thought, Does he really have Katie? And then she fell into a deep sleep. It was five-thirty in the morning.
