“Good morning, lovely lady. Do you mind if I join you?” He tipped his hat to her, and smiled warmly as he took the chair across from her.
She put the paper down, disappointed by the intrusion. “Why do you ask me that after you’ve already inflicted yourself upon me?”
Mickey ignored her rude behavior, and reached for a piece of her toast. “You don’t get much time alone anymore, do you? Got you on a tight leash, does he?”
She squinted and made a funny shape with her mouth, almost a pout. “Who in the hell are you, Mister?” She slapped his hand as he reached for another piece of her toast.
“Oh, forgive me. My name is Mickey and I’m a fisherman.” He smiled proudly over the sound of his words. “And I’m obviously hungry. Perhaps you could order more toast and a cup of tea for me?”
“Do I look like a mission… Mickey, is it? What are you, a vagabond?”
“Actually, I’m a friend of Ben’s and I’m here to fish. This is a blue ribbon river, you know. I have really grown quite fond of this place and have met a lot of nice people. I must say, there are a lot of nice people around here, don’t you think?”
Gloria cracked a little smile, and told the waiter to bring more toast and some tea for the two of them. “There are some okay people around here, I guess. I don’t get out much anymore, so I’m kinda’ losin’ touch.”
“Oh, dear lady.” He lit up from his idea. “Why don’t you let me take you on a nature walk. I know a place near here that would delight you. Let’s say we finish our tea and take off.”
She looked around, checking to see if anyone was watching them before answering. She leaned over the table and in a whisper said, “Mickey, help get me away from here. Please.”
“Who is your friend, dear?”
