If you’re a parent, you’re used to sacrificing many things for the best interests of your child. If you could take away their pain by absorbing it yourself, you would. In fact, you already have: you’ve driven yourself crazy, turned your world upside down, and most likely spent a ton of money in an effort to save them. Your substitute self is the “fixer” or “rescuer.” You’ve pleaded, yelled, enabled, and cried to get them to stop the devastation. Yet their pain persists.
When none of your tireless, heroic actions work, it’s normal to question your own worth. After all, if you can’t make life better for your child, then what is your purpose as a parent? What right do you have to live a good life when they’re suffering and you’re unable to help?
