“Will I ever see him again?”
Udo considered her question. He did not have an answer, but yearned to cheer her up, “Maybe you see him and don’t realize it. Mother is convinced the raven that hides in the tree in front of her house is Ugi.”
Sakonige frowned as she looked into Udo’s eyes. He then was concerned, thinking that it was wrong to give her false hope. “Of course, she used to think it was her sister, too.”
Udo laughed again, this time at his inside joke, but Sakonige’s eyes glazed over as though she were thinking but not seeing. Then she turned and looked outside, “Was it?”
Udo frowned, “Was it what?”
“Her sister?”
Without waiting for his answer, she gracefully rose to her feet, dropping the blanket, and hurried outside. Surprised by her reaction, Udo rolled onto his knees, grabbed hold of the stone hearth and pushed himself to his feet. He found her studying the old pine tree growing beside her house. With a childlike delight now in her eyes, she turned to Udo, “I’ve heard a raven chattering in this tree.”
She looked up into its dark, leafy shadows, “It never occurred to me it might be ...”
