Was I surprised at the speed with which this new-found love happened? If hours could be broken down into minutes, and minutes into seconds, the length of time it took to fall in love with Marah could be measured in miniscule portions of seconds. She had done the impossible, allowing me to live with the memory of Seth’s dying.
Normally a cautious man, I gave myself totally to the emotions I was feeling. I was like a man diving off a high-diving board. Once my feet left the board, a kind of gravity took over and I was totally committed to the dive.
That night, we walked far from the encampment, enjoying the fading sunlight until we were both sitting on a stone wall at the edge of an olive grove.
“I can get a motorcycle,” Marah said, “and the coast isn't that far, maybe five or six hours.” She took out a crude map and pointed to a place called Vinaros.
“The way you drive,” I laughed, “more like fifteen minutes.”
She turned a glare in my direction, “And you want to complain. The faster we get there…” leaving the rest to my imagination.
