The noise of the motorbike was much closer, approaching at speed and she realised it must be on the track behind her but she couldn’t see as the way at this point ran between high hedges. Harry’s ears flicked back and she stroked his neck to reassure him. “It’s okay fella, just a bike. It’ll slow down when they see us.”
The track went steeply downhill and she heard the engine noise very close behind. She glanced back to see the quad bike bearing down on them fast and waved her arm to ask the rider to slow down but instead the bike roared louder as it accelerated. Harry started to sidle in fear, half turned towards the oncoming menace, then he broke into a canter, running from the roar literally at his heels. She struggled to hold him, relaxing the reins a little to ease him before shortening them and he was beginning to listen when the rider blew his horn, a screaming klaxon chasing them.
Harry bolted. The bike kept coming and as the track widened it swept passed them and she saw who it was. “Enjoy your gallop, Kate!” he yelled as he went by before disappearing round the sharp bend ahead.
