“After a long morning spent under the blazing sun and no sign of either animal or bird, the party took rest in the shadow of the great Sphinx. Tuthmosis chose to sit between the Sphinx’s paws where its mighty head blocked more of Re’s rays.”
“Is that when the Sphinx talked to him?”
“Yes, it was. And this is what it said: ‘Look upon me, my son Tuthmosis! It is I, your father, Horemakhet Kepri Re Atum. It is I who gives power over all Egypt. Both its White Crown and its Red Crown shall sit upon your brow.’”
“The crown of both Egypts, Father?”
“Yes, my son.”
“Then he continued the story.”
“‘You must clear this desert sand from my limbs and protect me from further damage. Long have I awaited your coming, my son. Forever will I watch over you.’”
“Then the Sphinx spoke no more.”
