Do you want some help or do you want more time? gives the student an important and empowering choice. Whenever a student asks for help, have them call on someone for support. If that next student has a sufficient answer, go back and call on the student who asked for help and have them repeat or rephrase.
Use this strategy especially when students answer, “I don’t know.” This will send an important message to the group that this is a hard-working, thinking class and that they can’t get off the hook with easy replies like, “I don’t know.”
