Where were the others and what was taking them so long? Jason and his team had arrived the previous night, fully expecting that Marcos, Harriet, and the rest of the team that had gone to the Independent Republic of Texas had beaten them here. Their trip was supposed to be the done deal out of the two teams’ and Jason had an ominous feeling about the IRT team’s delay. Of course, no one had heard anything. Sam had confirmed communications were still down the night before.
When he reached the ground level, he peered up through the trees and heard the whine of a jet flying high overhead, its path concealed by the low clouds. Was that the FRA military looking for them or a mere coincidence? But how? They’d taken out two FRA hover planes and dodged a jet searching for them on their way from Minnesota. Could that be the FRA military searching for the IRT team?
For their sakes, Jason hoped his friends had secured transport — even better would be a hover plane. If they had to walk, it could be weeks before they made it here.
Shaking his head, Jason turned into the building, gently closing the door behind him. Maybe later he’d keep himself busy by repairing the cafeteria’s front door, which hung crooked on its hinges. Or maybe it was that way because no one had any tools. He’d have to ask Moses, or maybe Sam.
A crack of thunder behind Jason made him jump and the clouds opened up to a downpour. He looked back the way he came and wondered how long he’d have to wait out the storm.
