“No!” Harriet added a curse to her silent exclamation when she emerged from the Underground tunnel entrance and saw the patrol officer standing on her back stoop, the door into her kitchen hanging open. She had arrived back in Obsidian in the early morning hours, with every inch of her body exhausted from their midnight exploration of the militia warehouse the night before.
She ducked back inside the empty building’s emergency exit, a desperate plan taking shape. Harriet retreated into the tunnel, then sprinted to the other Obsidian tunnel access point by the rec center.
She had no choice. No way would she leave her family to face the patrols alone, without her. Someone must have tracked her outside the city. They must have seen where she’d gone, that she’d not been back before curfew the night before, and were now taking her rebellion out on her family.
Alma May would tell her to be brave, and facing patrols is what Alma May would do if she were here now.
