“Look, I know you’re mad at me for just showing up at HQ,” Dez said, and Harriet’s eyes flew to the camera right over their heads.
She tossed him a look and lifted a finger to her lips. Did he want to get them both arrested? “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“But I was only trying to protect you.”
Harriet rolled her eyes. She wished Alma May were here to tell him what for. He deserved it. Protect her? How could anyone protect Harriet from a murderous patrol captain who had her mother in lockup?
“You can think what you want, but I know patrols have been on your tail constantly. If they saw you head into the tunnels, I’d be there to distract them.”
“Dez, just leave it alone. I don’t know what tunnels you’re talking about, so you distracting anyone is unnecessary. Besides, there’s nothing you can do about patrols following me, even if the captain is your best buddy. And please leave me alone.” Harriet allowed her gaze to drift to the camera again. Did Dez want patrols to hear their every word? Was this some kind of entrapment scheme? She stood and walked away from him.
“I know about your mom’s arrest.”
