What is Your Relationship with the Present Moment?
Present moment is being here now.
Where are you right now as you read this? Are you present? Are you focused on the words on the page? Are you distracted? Are you present or of you thinking of your to-do-list? Are your thoughts projected into the past or the future? Where are your thoughts right now?
Often, we do not have a good relationship with the present moment. Most often we project into the future while at the same time making current decisions and choices in the past.
Being present is being aware and mindful of what is going on now, from your physical, emotional and mental state, to what is happening right now around you and in your life.
What if you brought your awareness into the present moment?
Do you find it difficult to be in the present moment? Are you constantly hurrying to get to the next moment, the next step, or the next project? Are you thinking of something you did wrong yesterday, or how you could have done something differently, or wished you hadn’t or had done something?
Studies have shown that we spend 47% of time with our minds wandering on other things rather than what is happening right now. Our minds wander aimlessly from thought to thought so much of the time that we don’t experience what is happening in the moment at all. Including not fully being aware of those thoughts floating across our minds!
If you were paying attention to what you are actually doing, the choices that you are making, you would actually not make many of those choices, you would choose to not do them or make a different choice.
Being in the present moment means to be aware and mindful of what is happening right now. It means not thinking about the past or the future or of something other than what you are doing now, what you are feeling, seeing, sensing, experiencing right in front of you in this moment.
See if you can be present right now for one minute. Is your mind wandering? What are you thinking about? Are you experiencing yourself and what is going on around you fully?
We sometimes have spontaneous moments of present moment awareness. This usually happens in those moments when you are doing something you love, you are focused and present.
When have you had an experience of being engulfed in present moment when your awareness is on exactly what you are doing without thought? A space of time where you are one with whatever you are doing?
Everything happens in the present moment. Unfortunately, we often miss it or not fully experience it. It is what leads us to make unhealthy choices and bad decisions because we are not fully aware of everything that is taking place in that moment.
