A rough shaking rattled her. “Come on, you. You’re coming with me.”
Who spoke to her with such bitter anger? The woman heard the hate streaming from this stranger’s words, felt it in the cruelty of the shaking. A woman’s voice and hands.
“No, please, leave me alone.” The woman understood she shouldn’t go with this unknown woman. But she couldn’t clear her head, couldn’t quite come awake.
Too weak to fight her.
The stranger pulled her onto her feet, threw the woman’s arm over her shoulder, and wrapped the other arm around her back.
Pain. Can’t walk.
The stranger dragged her along the gray linoleum floor and through the arched doorway. Down a narrow, shiny white hall. Her consciousness fled again. She knew only blackness until she awakened in a nightmare basement that would be her prison for decades to come.
