THE HOSPITAL DOOR OPENED AND A TALL, THIN WOMAN ENTERED wearing a light-weight, white, silk coat that stretched to her ankles, three-inch black spike heels, and a large, black, wide-brimmed hat with a huge, curled, black feather stretching forward, as if pointing the way. She looked about seventy years of age, but she’d matured well. She wore dark, bold eyeshadow and eyeliner, and, squinting closely at her face, Shannon surmised that those thick, long eyelashes might be artificial. The silver hair, peeping out from the hat, cut in a bob, contained streaks of darkest blue. She’d chosen fuchsia for her lipstick and her long polymer nails matched the bright pink.
