“Honey, Erik and I have been discussing his ability to save for retirement. Since his wife isn’t working right now so she can take care of their young kids, it might be tough for a while.” Jackson placed another article on the table in front of Jodi. “He shared this with me, knowing you didn’t take that promotion because you want more time to help your parents. The article says family caregivers who disrupt their careers or leave the labor force entirely to meet caregiving demands can face substantial economic risk and both short- and long-term financial difficulties.”17
Jackson and Jodi sit quietly at the table consumed by their thoughts and dreading what lies ahead.
So many of us, in one way or another, are like the Jones family. They don’t know how to frame the conversation, they don’t know the next steps, and they certainly don’t have a plan to deal with what’s coming. Luckily, after listening to her husband and hearing how concerned her children are, Jodi acknowledges that it is time for the family to navigate a workable plan.
