Author Biography

Carroll S. Golden, CLU, ChFC, FLMI, CASL, LACP, LTCP, CLTC, is an executive, author, and pubic speaker whose focus is working with agents/advisors and caregivers about opening family discussions and planning for extended care needs. Currently, she serves as the Executive Director of the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors (NAIFA) Specialty Centers. She is dedicated to helping professionals and families create and fund a plan for extended care by providing actionable information, guidance, effective strategies, expertise, and resources. Following Carroll’s text-book for professionals, “How Not To Tear Your Family Apart,” her second book, an Amazon #1 Best Seller story-book, “How Not To Pull Your Family Apart” encourages individuals and families to identify with the story’s characters, overcome the silence, and engage in these important discussions. Success = Fact Finder + The "Talk"

Our grandparents and great grandparents hydrated with cocktails (they didn’t carry their own supply of water everywhere they went). Exercise included getting off the couch to change TV channels (no remote available), typing was a secretarial career skillset (now everyone starts typing as soon as their parents give them a device), and longevity planning meant collecting social security as a major funding vehicle for the retirement years. Life expectancy at birth in 1930 was 58 for men and 62 for women, and the retirement age was 65. That points out another major change- longevity. We don’t plan for the extended care needs that associate with longevity. A basic element of good planning is using a fact finder. Yet so many clients and consumers don’t create documents to list what they have, what’s missing, and what their wishes are as they age and their circumstances change. Another basic but essential element in creating a good plan is having an old fashion discussion. The best discussion leads to humanizing the fact finder which leads to better planning and the reduction of family tension. The advisor has an opportunity to facilitate these conversations. Use a three step approach to get things going and create plans that work for both the caregiver and care recipient.

In order to move forward, let me share a summary Grandpa and I put together using family history and information from several of the Care Guide questionnaires and worksheets. Thanks to Nicole for the work she did with Grandpa. This summary will help us as we consider and eliminate various limited, extended, or long-term care options. At the end of the process, it will help Grandpa explain to specialists why certain options appeal to him and Grandma.”

Jodi presents the following summary:

“Grandpa is a veteran.
Grandpa receives Social Security benefits.
Grandma receives spousal Social Security benefits.
Their income is supplemented by a modest amount from savings and investments.
They are proud they have no mortgage on their home, which has increased in value since they purchased it.
They both qualify for Medicare and have Medicare Advantage policies.
Grandpa has a Whole Life Insurance Policy, but as you all know, he has stated unequivocally that beneficiary proceeds are to be equally divided between his grandchildren, Erik and Nicole.
They drew up a will, but it has not been updated for many years.
Both of them, thanks to Step One, the Care Guide, now have advanced medical directives, a durable power of attorney for health care or property, and a do-not resuscitate order.”

With the summary completed and updated documents, the CPT can move on to long-term care options.
