It couldn’t have been a more dreary day for their wedding. And though Mim had suggested they postpone the marriage for at least a week, Anthony would not hear of it.
It wasn’t just that Topsail Island was mourning, but the whole nation was mourning after the announcement that President John F. Kennedy had been assassinated the day before.
Schools were closed, businesses on the island were closed and the pall of disbelief and sorrow hung everywhere. But Anthony was unaffected and convinced mother and daughter to go ahead with the ceremony.
Mim thought of the young president and, though she knew mother had not voted for him, she felt a great foreboding. As if the world had been shaken like a chess board and all the pieces were in a jumble.
