“Melite, do you like the name?”
Estelle nodded, “Yes, I like it—sounds exotic.”
“We all have mermaid names, you’ll learn the names of the other girls soon.” The older woman rasped a laugh. “I was Kai when I swam—it’s the Hawaiian name for mermaid.”
How were you a mermaid? Estelle wondered. Maybe a manatee at one time. Smiling, she responded, “I bet you were pretty back then.”
“Honey, everybody’s pretty when they’re young.” Estelle laughed along with the older woman.
“My you are a tall girl,” Mrs. Horswaller observed. “That’s a good thing.” She smiled and filed through the fish tail suits hanging along the wall. Turning to face Estelle, she continued,
