Mitzi felt the clackity-clunk of the Surf City swing bridge beneath her car as she crossed over onto Topsail Island. She’d never been there before, but so far what she saw pleased her. The town looked small and sleepy. A man standing by the Red and White Grocery store waved as he opened the car door for his wife. Just beyond the dunes was the Atlantic Ocean, and the thought of it excited her.
North Carolina sure was a long way from California in so many ways. Mitzie kind of liked that, especially after all the glitz and pretense of the west coast. At least here she did not have to try to be cool, or keep up with the latest drug trends. She found herself thinking that perhaps life could be different. She sighed at the thought, wishing she hadn’t met Amos, but still holding out hopes that he would come through with his promises to help her.
