“Listen, Rico. I think you have to trust people sometimes. And I trust Officer Logan a lot. I mean, really.” The boy ignores her and retrieves the leather reins. “Hey, are you even listening to me?” she demands.
“Save your breath, High-rise.” He stands, arms folded across his chest, a steely glint in his eyes.
“No! Not till you tell me you’re gonna help save this horse, cowboy!” To prove she means business, she folds her own arms across her chest. It isn’t hard to glare back at him. “You said you and Rosa won that rodeo because you were a team, remember?”
Rico gives her a skeptical nod.
“Well, looks like I’m the only team you’ve got right now. And he needs us.” She points at the horse and waits. Caesar whinnies and bobs his head as if in agreement. “See? Even he wants us to be his team.” She strokes the horse’s cheek. “We won’t let you down, buddy,” she croons.
