“But the owner does not deserve this horse!” Thunderclouds cross Rico’s face.
The policeman looks surprised by his outburst. “That’s a bold statement, isn’t it?” His tone suddenly grows official. “I didn’t quite catch your name, son.”
“Rico, sir.”
“And how is it you know so much about what’s right and wrong for a horse, Rico?” The officer’s eyes narrow and he turns to Maxzyne. “Where did you meet this young man? At school?”
Maxzyne doesn’t dare look at Rico. “Oh, um, well, there’s this horse place—near school,” she quickly adds. “They do shows, stuff like that. Rico, he’s a ga …” She stops herself just in time. “Ga-ga! Just crazy about horses. They’re like family to him. He’s there every chance he gets.”
