He told Tommy that if it were not for him, Tommy would be an orphan.
During one of Tommy’s later visits to Omaha, he said his father told him I had abandoned both of them because I wanted to go off and have a happy life on my own. He told Tommy that if it were not for him, Tommy would be an orphan. I was furious when I heard this. How could a father who truly loved his son tell him such a frightening lie? This is an example of alienating behavior at its most destructive. It also put me in the position of tearing Tommy in two if I told him the truth versus allowing him to believe the lie so he would not lose trust in the only person he trusted. My hollow words of reassurance that I had not intended to abandon him fell on deaf ears.
