He loved holding her in his arms until sleep overtook them—a perfect ending for a pair in love. The sunrise brought a rosy glow to their bedroom as sleep gave way to her open eyes and snuggles.
“Was there something you wanted to tell me last night, Jo? I sensed something was nagging at you as we came upstairs, but we got so delightfully distracted I forgot to ask. Did I do something?”
Jo chuckled and moved a bit closer under the covers. “No, honey, not you. I saw something that’s hard to explain. This teenaged girl was standing next to an older man whom I assumed was her father. Something felt awkward, JJ, like she was scared almost looking for a way out. I was uncomfortable with the scene, but I can’t tell you why. When I turned to look again, they were gone. It was odd.”
“Jo, you picked this up looking through a window toward the late afternoon sun after mere seconds. I’m sorry you were shaken. There could be many reasons for an icy, frictional state between a father and daughter, like if she was dating someone such as me. I know you have the women’s intuition advantage over emotionally challenged guys, but it was likely nothing.”
“I guess you’re right. I was tired after our travel. That podcast was interesting. Those ladies seem to care about their community, but they are a bit opinionated, aren’t they?”
“I’d have to agree with that statement. I still haven’t resolved in my mind, why their machines were hosed up.”
“I know it’ll come to you at some point. I’m hungry. Let’s get dressed and go to breakfast.”
“Race you to the tub.”
Jo playfully pushed him. “Ladies first,” she announced. “I think we ought to hike around and see what we can discover about Magnolia Bluff.”
She rose from bed and JJ joined her, wrapping her in his arms. “Great idea. Hurry, otherwise, we might never leave this room.”
“We might also try horseback riding. I love doing that at home when time permits. I bet Lily would know of riding options. This is such a quaint community. I want to see all it has to offer, okay?”
“Let’s explore everything.” He kissed her sweetly. “With our limited time, I’d like to enjoy the local color while we regain closeness for fun and play. I know that you brought those short shorts, but if we’re going riding, you’ll want your jeans. You’re experienced enough that sneakers should work.”
“I stuffed them and my bikini in my small backpack just in case. I know I’m not here for a film shoot, so ponytail and lightweight stuff is my plan. I’m ready to have some relaxing fun.”
“No crash helmet or parachute?” JJ laughed as he twirled her around with a hug, then set her down and released her as he dashed off. Jo raced after JJ, who promptly grabbed the bathroom and locked the door. “Ah, I get the bathroom first.”
Her comment, filled with palpable annoyance, penetrated through the door. “You tricked me, JJ.”
